Salary Cap is ‘working how it’s meant to probably’: Greenberg

BY DAN

NRL Chief Executive Officer Todd Greenberg has said that competitions salary cap is  ‘probably working fine’ after reports emerged the Roosters would sign star halfback Cooper Cronk.

Speaking to reporters at NRL HQ, Greenberg outlined how the system was achieving what it had always intended, ensuring that player resources flowed to where they are most needed – Sydney and Brisbane.

“It just shows how committed the NRL is to a level playing field.”

When asked if he was sure if the Roosters could afford the reported $1m a year that Cronk commanded, after already acquiring star fullback James Tedesco, Greenberg said “numbers aren’t really my thing.” But he did offer that the NRL’s honesty system approach to cap regulation had been pretty good in busting other sides.

“Look Nick has assured me that the Roosters had the space under their cap so who am I to question that? They haven’t turned themselves in like Parra did so I reckon there’s nothing to worry about.”
